The purpose of this paper is to apply the recommendations of the National Mathematics
Advisory Panel (2008) to the practice of preparing and developing highly effective mathematics
teachers. This paper describes the Innovation Coniguration for Effective Teaching and Learning
of Mathematics. The Innovation configuration is offered as a means of evaluating and aligning
teacher preparation and professional development activities to promote stronger learning of
mathematics in accordance with recent recommendations of the National Mathematics Advisory
Panel (2008). The Innovation Configuration provides a set of actionable recommendations for
all teacher educators (i.e., preservice teacher educators, inservice professional development
providers, school and district leaders) in applying the panel’s recommendations to bolster the
quality of mathematics teaching and learning in schools.
